This is by far the best sushi spot in the neighborhood! I think it's a little underrated because of its location. There's never many people in here which is good for us, but makes me worry for the business. More people need to know about this wonderful gem!!! My boyfriend and I frequent Koto and have never had a bad experience. The service is exceptional (I ordered my dressing on the side the first time we ever came and our lovely waitress always remembers that detail!) Ugh...I just love it here. It's very intimate, quiet and romantic. The rolls are seriously out of this world. The flavors and combinations are spot on. The temperature of the fish is perfect. The iced green tea and saki is delicious. I love it here...so so much!!!!!

We stumbled into this place because we were just looking for anyplace to eat. This is a little cute quaint sushi place, very clean. We ordered the Toro Nigiri, Spicy Salmon Roll, Peanut Spicy Sweet Shrimp and my friend ordered the tempura udon. Overall, the food wasn't bad but certainly not amazing. Their portions are so tiny and not very filling. I was still hungry after eating all my food and ate some of my friend's tempura. The tempura was pretty nice and freshly flaky which was the best out of all the dishes. Koto Sushi is a standard sushi spot, but the prices aren't the best, it's a bit pricey based on the quality and overall the quality isn't the best. It's 'meeehhh' at best.

Not exactly the most awesome looking Chirashi and not sure it was worth the price. Should probably stick with rolls here? Tasted okay but nothing to write home about like some of the other reviews mentioned. Delivery was incredibly fast though came fatter than expected!

Had delivery from them today. Ordered the seafood special which was a seafood soup in broth with noodles (I chose Udon). The broth was a bit mild and needed a bit of soy sauce but it was packed with Shrimp, mussels, clams in their shells and imitation crab. The seafood was fresh and the noodles were the right amount of pull. Also got a Californa Roll which was a standard if a bit smaller version. Fresh tasting. Delivery came blessedly fast as we have been having issues with slow deliveries lately (Kimchi Grill Im looking at you). Just went back on friday for sushi. Had the sushi lunch platter which was 7 pcs and a Cali roll. The usual lunch pieces of Salmon,Tuna,Mackrel,Red Snapper and it was all very fresh. Some of the best sushi I have gotten in quite awhile.

I constantly order and eat at Koto. I can honestly say that I have not once been disappointed by the food. Even though I don't get extravagant things, the simple things taste amazing. I love the chicken tempura rolls, shumai, miso soup, etc. The people who work here are extremely nice, so overall Koto is an amazing place to find great Japanese food, good environment, and friendliness!!

Koto never disappoints. We get takeout or dine here at least once a month. The folks are always incredibly hospitable and the chefs even look up from their task to greet you when you walk in. The food is always fresh and they have a decent alcohol menu. The place itself is a quiet neighborhood spot and doesn't get too crazy so you can actually have a conversation over dinner. Great job Koto Sushi!

Love Koto. The confusing part is there is also a Kyoto (with a Y) in the neighborhood. Both are good, but I think Koto is a bit superior (which also makes it slightly pricier). I've never dined IN, so this review is based on the delivery/ take-out experience. They are always quite friendly over the phone, timely with their deliveries & I've always found the sushi and the rest of their dinner entrees very fresh. No complaints.

Apparently the new owners destroyed this place. We went a few days ago and had one of the worst sushi experiences yet. The highlight of our evening was the $8 toro which was literally still frozen on our plate. There were ice crystals as we bit into it, and the fish smelled well beyond its expiration. What scared us the most was when the chef asked "soo what did you like best, the toro, right?" -- "no.. that was still frozen.. uhh.. we liked.." and i was embarrassingly stalling, pointing to the plate trying to figure out which was the most edible. I couldn't make up my mind until he said "Oh so and so roll?" -- "sure, yes, that one was the best. Thanks." This place has been scratched off our list -- don't waste the money to find out it's time to scratch it off yours. --- Pleasantly surprised with the quality and taste of the sushi. Tried two special rolls and two normal rolls. Amount of the fish and the overall taste were extremely delicious and filling. Great bargain prices for the amount and quantities. It may not feel very authentic inside, but the important thing is how tasty the sushi is that arrives at your table. I'll trade in "fancy decor" and "5 page menu of sake" for the great improvement in the taste. That's what you get here.. a very quick, simple, and enjoyably tasty experience without the atmosphere. There's no alcohol that we saw, and when we asked for iced tea it was served to us in lipton ice tea cans.. but beyond that, i think we'll be ordering delivery from here because the sushi left us with a very pleasant taste and happy decision to have given this place a try.

Fresh fish made to order in front of us. Prices are good esp for the quantity. Definitely will come back.

If you're willing to travel off of Smith Street for excellent pizza at Lucali's, you should be willing to travel to Koto for some fantastic sushi. Don't be fooled by the generic sushi joint awning, Koto has some of the freshest sushi in the neighborhood. Their presentation of rolls and sashimi is gorgeous. I highly recommend the diced tuna, avocado and homemade wasabi appetizer. As for rolls: the rock and roll is possibly the best I've tried anywhere and pairs very well with the yellowtail special roll. Sake is also reasonably priced. We shared a nice bottle for only $12. I also second another Yelp reviewer on their Chirashi. It's excellent.

Delivery is always quick, fish quality is usually fine (had one horrible unagi experience) but i don't think they keep their brown rice very fresh as every time i get it, it's gooey and flavorless.

Don't know about ownership issues of the past, but we've been ordering koto couple times a month for the past 10 months or so and it does not disappoint. Unlike other highly rated sushi in the area, I've never experienced an off night when the fish was anything less than fresh. Specialty rolls are really good, as are the shumai and gyoza. Never eaten in but delivery is always quick. Overall a very reliable sushi takeout spot.

One of the better sushi places in ther area. Just seems more authentic for some reason. Presentation is good, fish fresh, I guess they just don't seem like they are trying too hard. Service was amicable as well. I hope it gets busy so they stay open, it seemed kinda slow the last time I went. Hand rolls were yum!

I wavered a bit on the thought of giving five stars to this place, not because the food was subpar, but because I just don't like giving five stars unless it's REALLY the best I've had. But it would be dishonest to give this place four stars. And let's face it. It was damn good. My friend and I wanted a late dinner at Lucali's right across the street, but they were closed. We glanced around, starving, and saw the "Open" sign on Koto Sushi. I thank my lucky stars we found this place. It was completely empty (we walked in around 10:30 pm) with just one server and one sushi chef behind the bar. The service was perfect. The environment is nice, though I found the lighting to be really too dim. Is it just me? For sushi, I think the visual aspect is part of the whole experience... and to blot out the colors with the dim lighting just makes me feel sad. Sad for the washed-out sushi colors. Annnyway. I had just accomplished something pretty spectacular (my last final exam in a formal schooling environment EVER) so I wanted a treat. I know going from Lucali's pizza to extra-special sushi is a leap, but what can I say. ;) I ordered the omakase. For $29, you get a nicely sized variety of the chef's choice of sushi, with a spicy roll tucked in the corner in case you weren't satisfied. I left those untouched until the very very end. When the server handed me my wooden block full of deliciousness, she very sternly ordered me not to add soy sauce to any of the special pieces. "The chef already put it on, so don't add anymore. Okay?" I can't remember all the rolls. I know there was a salmon with onion relish that I found surprisingly well-balanced. It was the type of flavor that tastes so *right*, you wonder why it's not ALWAYS done that way. Like PB&J. So natural. Salmon and onion relish. Delicious. There was freshwater eel, saltwater eel, and many more. I was completely impressed and my taste buds were a-tingling. They offer a full page of beer & wine & sake for those alcoholically inclined. And yes, don't let the standard japanese restaurant awning fool you. This is no Shinjuku. Expressing my compliments to the chef, I made sure to grab a delivery menu on the way out. 'course, no omakase on the take-out menu, but at least I know this place has good standards, well designed rolls, and fresh fish.

Sushi is fresh and the apps are tasty. I have never had a bad experience. Everything is delicious and the people who run it are great- helpful and pleasant. As far as neighborhood sushi goes, this is the best. And they deliver to Red Hook via moped. Keep up the good work.

OMG, Jessica and Steve are GONE!!! I had dinner there last night and had what must have been the worst, most upsetting dinning experience I've ever had. I have only been going there since March, but had fallen in love with the place. The warm hospitality and the amazingly fresh fish, as well as other entrees, transported me. Jessica, lovely and delicate as an orchid, and Steve, so cute and a seriously gifted chef, were a perfect couple bringing their talents and love to us all. I entered last night and saw a new chef. I asked one of the waitresses where Steve was, and she told me he was on vacation. I had just seen Steve the previous Sunday, and thought it odd he didn't mention it to me. Then she said he'd be on vacation for a very very long time. She made it sound like he'd been rubbed out...cue creepy music and feelings of fear. OK, I tried to settle down and convince myself there was nothing wrong. I then asked for a glass of Falanghina, which created quite a stir. I was then told there was a problem with the liquor license and they wouldn't be serving alcohol for a couple weeks. Now I know something is wrong, and am starting to feel sick inside...I know Steve and Jessica are gone. I decided to order simply, no Omakase for me, thank you very much. The appetizer arrived, my usual tuna avocado with wasabi, and I was told the "new" chef makes it different (sic). Yeah, it was different, no wasabi sauce and very creamy instead....not bad mind you, but not what I ordered. The mayonnaisey dressing left a nauseating feeling in my stomach which accompanied my feelings of dread and abandonment perfectly. As I thought about what was happening there, tears started to well up in my eyes, and they do not come easily to me...in fact, I'm crying as I write this. Then my rolls arrived. The Rock-n-Roll was flaccid and undistinguished, with only one Tobiko on top to boot. Only the yellowtail roll was the same, but seriously, how can you screw up just Hamachi, mint and roe. I was asked several times how everything was too many times. I was growing to dislike such unctuous service, they trying so hard and not being honest with me. Two other men appeared, watching over everything....the new managers, owners??? I decided to look, perhaps stare at one of them. Instead of a smile, I received a stony expression that would have put Buster Keaton to shame. The energy in there was quite uncomfortable and unpleasant. I paid my bill, and was asked by one of the men how the food was. I told him it was just O.K. I felt like telling him what I really thought, but they should learn that lesson for themselves. I don't like being lied to. They're on vacation for a very very long time??? Please, I'm not 5 years old and my dog didn't just die. I was so disgusted and upset, I felt like committing harakiri on the sidewalk if front of the place. This restaurant had become an oasis in a desert of mediocre dinning establishments for me. I found myself eating there 3 times a week, and wondering if I should be spending so much money. I'm glad now that I did. I will always have many memories of this place. The incredible food combined with the beautiful Jessica and Steve will not be matched, and yes, the quirky music they played as well, will all be missed. I am profoundly saddened by this turn of events, and wish I knew exactly what happened. You will have to decide for yourself, but I, for one, will not be going back. Take this, perhaps, as and elegy for a much loved place and two people that had come to be very dear to me. Kenneth

Surprisingly good sushi. From the look of the place, I expected run of the mill Japanese food that can be had at any 'pan-Asian' place in Brooklyn - there are very few excellent Japanese restaurants in the borough - but the fact that the menu had a variety of market-priced toro was a hopeful sign. We ordered in so I can't comment on the ambiance. We had the yellowtail with jalapenos and yuzu sauce, which seemed fresh and was tasty and agedashi dofu, which was good but not the most interesting I've had as the tofu was covered only in dried fish shavings, as appetizers. We had the standard sushi platter, salmon skin maki and tamago sashimi. The sushi platter was very good and looked very fresh. Interesting pieces included a salmon sushi with roasted skin and a small dollop of white sauce tasted horse-radishy but may have been something totally different, and a nice piece of unagi. I prefer salmon skin maki with a bit more salmon meat. The tamago was very good. Hibino is still the best sushi in Brooklyn and its menu is more interesting and eclectic than Koto. However Koto is a very strong second and there are frequent times when I just want a regular plate of sushi and standard appetizer fare - in those cases Koto would be my first choice.

Have been a couple of times, and it's gotten better over time. They seem to have hit their stride. Truly some of the best sushi I have had in New York. It's not fancy or stylish, so if you're looking for swank you'll need to go elsewhere. But if you stick with the chef's recommendations you will find extremely great, fresh fish. Creative rolls, friendly people running the joint. Certainly the best in the neighborhood, and rivaling some of the best of Manhattan too.

Went there yesterday for a quick roll. It was not the best nor the worst I have ever had. Our waitress didn't speak much English but was really so freaking cute! The chirashi bowl was beautiful but standard. My one qualm with the food is this... Sushi, in my opinion, should never and I mean never be served warm. I don't care how fresh the rice is. The search for the most bombtastic sushi in the hood continues.

i was tired from a long night of studying and i was craving some sushi. so i decided to stop by this place to pick up some fine sushi. i stopped by around 10:20 pm, and i was the only customer which got me a bit nervous. i decided to do courage and went inside anyway. right when i walked in, i noticed that they speak mandarin here. (i dont hate. i just point out the obvious). i ordered the sashimi deluxe (18 pieces) to go for $23 and you can choose to get miso soup or salad. it was cold out so i decided to get the miso. the sashimi was pretty good, nothing to rave about and the soup was okay. they have decent seating inside. there is only one chef. i think this place is owned by a chinese couple. this place also plays chinese music. i'll probably stop by again if i don't want to travel far and i'm craving.

This place just opened a few months ago. The food has always been good but it has gotten much better as of late. Their lunch specials are standard like most sushi and thai places ( I swear it has to be a rule with them). However, their salmon terriyaki is excellent and they give you a lot. It comes with some vegetables that are so soft and tasty. My only problem with them so far is the chicken terriyaki. It's good but they give you more dark meat than white meat. I have never seen this before so if you like dark meat than go for it, if not than steer clear of that. The sushi is fresh and tasty and that's all you can really ask for. I think as times goes on this place with get better. The competition in Carroll Gardens and Park Slope with thai and sushi joints is getting crazy. But competition brings out the best in some people. I think they may have just gotten their liquor license but they still have a BYOB sign in their window. The place is decent size and they have jazzed it up lately with some nice details.

I love Koto! The food is consistent and the service is friendly and accommodating. It is a delight to eat here as it has become a neighborhood staple for me and my family. Favorites include the Hamachi Kama, the Buddha Roll (eel, shrimp tempura and mango) and good old sashimi entrees.

Koto used to be my go-to sushi place until the management switch in early 2009. The fish is clearly not as good it used to be. Part of good sushi is the way the fish is cut; the last time I went, my hamachi nigiri seemed way too thick and did not melt in my mouth like good hamachi is supposed to. And the worst part is that the fish is not fresh at all. Major fail. The previous owners were incrediby pleasant and since I frequented the place, they would give me free miso soup with my sushi or at times free green tea ice cream. The fish was always consistently good and the chef knew his way with the knife. Def. not the best I've had but never disappointed. I don't go anymore as I refuse to pay for poor quality fish. It's best to take the brisk walk to Hibino if you are in the neighborhood.

What a treasure. The sushi was amazing. Fresh, tasty, and affordable. The restaurant wasn't crowded, and our service was prompt and friendly. After our appetizers I was shocked that this place wasn't packed. The jalapeño shrimp tempura was yummy. Lucky for us! We had the Black Pepper Tuna, Dragon Roll, Dynamite roll, Shrimp Tempura Roll, and just for good measure, a Philadelphia Roll. Delicious! I highly recommend this little corner gem. Can't wait to call for delivery!

Disclaimer: I've never actually eaten in this restaurant, so I can't speak for the service or atmosphere of the place. However, I've ordered delivery from here dozens and dozens of times. Basically, whenever I want Japanese, I order from here. For a number of reasons: 1) They are near my apartment (delivery is almost always fast). 2) They are on Seamless. But before I knew this, I would call and the person who took my order was very polite. 3) The delivery guys are always nice And most of all, 4) The sushi is very good and reasonably priced. Is it the best sushi I've ever had? No. But it's good and fresh and I've enjoyed everything I've ordered from there. I like getting their soups and a few orders of rolls. The bento boxes are also a great deal for those with larger appetites. I've gotten their pork katsu box a couple times, but I could never finish it all in one sitting. There are limited options for sushi in this neighborhood, so this is one of the good ones.

Everything was amazing tastes to good and good prices . Mango spicy shrimp and mango spicy chicken a must try. Fantastic rolls are well fantastic ! Dinner boxes are huge coming w your choice of meat , rolls , salad ,soup, rice and Edamame for like 13-15 bucks all worth it , Just go enjoy !

Great sushi, Sapporo Light bottles, nice quiet atmosphere where you can talk, polite service, and it's located on a quiet street (Henry). A pleasant family runs the place. Try the "sushi for two". It's a slam dunk.

One of my favorite memories as a couple has been geting incredibly wasted, super dressed up, walking a half a block from our apartment to Koto Sushi - and drinking $4 house sake. This place is good. It's cheap. It's never busy. It's right next door. I have a severe gluten allergy and never have an issue ordering here. Even when I'm drunk. If you're in the mood to be all fancy and upscale - I suggest Hibino.

The best sushi place in the area. (although maybe I'm biased since I live right above it) I moved here after the new ownership had already taken over, so I can't speak to how it compares. Maybe they were having growing pains because the sushi I've gotten here has always been above par (and I go here a lot). If you notice, the bad reviews are pretty contained to the "transition period" with good reviews before and several good reviews just recently. It's not a fancy or hip kind of place. The fish is fresh, the plates are nicely presented, a lot of days you might be the only diner in the restaurant. For a quiet lunch this is my favorite spot! (They do a lot of take out business based on my observations, so I don't worry too much about them going out of business). Service is quick and attentive. The people that work here really are oh-so-nice. They're just plain good people.

This place is actually more like 2.5 stars -- it's just ok. It *just* qualifies for the third star. I get sushi from here fairly frequently only because it is almost across the street from my apartment -- they make consistent hand rolls and serve good (typical) seaweed salad. The fish seems fresh and while it's not an amazing bargain, it's not overpriced either. So, you know, try it if you happen to live across the street. And while you're over here in my neighborhood, please don't park your car like a douchebag or forget to clean up after you dog. Thanks.

This place is fantastic. I never went under the old ownership, but I can tell you right now that you will not be disappointed. The service is extremely prompt and very friendly, and the food is nom-tastic. I've found the fish to be very fresh, and the special rolls are rad. I love the Dragon (kind of sweet, wrapped in avocado and so yum), and the Rock'n'Roll (spicy and crunchy). The meal starts with warm towels and ends with the most amazing orange you've laid eyes on - both included in your dinner. My only complaint is that it's slow a lot, and I like a little more energy. However, I go here a lot. You should eat here! It's a great deal for fantastic food, and you'll be well taken care of.

My gf and I get take-out or eat-in here at least twice a month because they are so consistent. The staff is so friendly, and they really aim to take care of you. I am always greeted with a smile and hello. They're appetizers are definitely unique and always surprise me, and the sushi and rolls are always so fresh. Japanese fried rice is excellent as well. Lastly, on occasion I order their tempura appetizer. It's made as soon as I order it, it's unreal, and it's the best tempura i've ever had.

  • Sara B.

I live right down the street from Koto and I don't understand why people aren't waiting to eat there like they are at Lucali. It's superb. When I order delivery they are quick and very polite. But best of all the fish so fresh, and they have a wonderful variety of well-priced rolls. I would really hate to see this place go out of business, but unless they have a booming take out business, I fear the worst. So go eat there! And try the jalapeno yellow tail appetizer--it's perfection.
